Guest Blog: Ingredients to avoid in skin care!

Ingredients to avoid in skin care

Shopping for the perfect skin care products can be very daunting. I would like to share some handy tips with you before you visit your professional skin care centre or the cosmetic counter.

Most products available today have a full ingredient listing on the outer packaging. Ingredients are listed from highest quantity to the lowest. Often ‘water’ or ‘aqua’ will be listed first as it is a water base formula. The preservatives are always the last few ingredients on the list.

*S.D. Alcohol (Specially Denatured Alcohol): This is very drying on the skin which will leave your skin feeling tight. Long term this could lead to sensitivity. Note that not all alcohol will have a drying effect on the skin, in fact some are actually hydrating to the skin.

*Artificial Fragrance: This could make your skin photosensitive (burn more easily when exposed to the sun) and lead to hyperpigmentation. Most often when people react to cosmetics, it is the artificial fragrance they react to. On the ingredient listing it will appear as ‘artificial fragrance’ or ‘perfume’.

*Artificial Colour: Not really necessary in product formulations. This could irritate sensitive skins which eventually leads to burning and redness.

*Lanolin: Use to moisturise the skin. If you are prone to breakouts or suffer with a very oily skin, this ingredient could cause more blackheads to form on your skin and will lead to breakouts. Not suggest for use on an Acne, Oily skin.

*Isopropyl Myristate: Used in cosmetics as a thickening agent and emollient. Historically, animal testing has shown it causes clogged pores.

Happy shopping!
